Andy Bassford’s first recording (with Massive Attack vocalist Horace Andy) resulted in the classic “In The Light” album, one of the best reggae albums of the seventies. Andy moved to Kingston, Jamaica in 1980. Over the next five years he recorded dozens of hits as an A-team session player with Roots Radics, Sly & Robbie, Joe Gibbs and the Professionals, the Wailers band, and many others. Andy also performed live with the top live reggae band of the era, Lloyd Parks & We The People. Moving to NYC in 1986, he began recording for the legendary Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One label. In 1988 he joined Toots & the Maytals and stayed for over twenty years. Andy also has toured with Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Yellowman, Super Cat, and the Skatalites. Andy has appeared on eight Grammy-nominated albums, including two Grammy winners (Toots & the Maytals’ “True Love” in 2004 and Burning Spear’s “Jah Is Real” in 2008). Among the countless recordings Andy has appeared on are Rihanna's multi-platinum album "A Girl Like Me,” Natalie Merchant's "Leave Your Sleep"(a Billboard Folk Chart #1), and Monty Alexander's "Harlem-Kingston Express Live," (A Jazz Radio and World Music #1 and a 2011 Grammy nominee). Other artists Andy has recorded or performed with include Bonnie Raitt, Trey Anastasio, Willie Nelson, Natalie Merchant, Alicia Keys, Percy Sledge, LaVern Baker, Ron Wood, Bobby Keys, Rosco Gordon, Coati Mundi, and Graham Haynes, as well as reggae artists from the Abyssinians to Zap Pow. In 2003, Andy received an award from the Jamaica Federation of Musicians for outstanding contributions to the development of the Jamaican music industry. Currently Andy plays sessions, teaches, and performs live with Monty Alexander, Derrick Barnett & Statement Band, NY Ska-Jazz Ensemble, CCB, Earl Appleton's Overproof and his own groups, Andy Bassford's Jazz Conspiracy and the Blue People. Andy has written for Guitar Player and Onstage magazines as well as at www.truefire.com. He is also writing a book about his experiences in Jamaica.
