Watch the Enhancing Your Thumb Speed online guitar lesson by Tommy Emmanuel from Fingerstyle Breakthroughs

In this video we'll talk a bit about the importance of enhancing your thumb speed. This is an important technique to get under your fingers and the time you spend working on it now will prove very useful once we get further into the repertoire part of the course.

We'll also learn some exercises that you can use to enhance your thumb speed. Take it slow at first, and then ease the tempo up on your metronome as you get more comfortable playing through the exercises.

The thumb plays such an important role in fingerstyle: It's not just going "boom-chick-boom-chick", it's also your time keeper. The thumb develops the backing to what you're playing up top, and because of this it has to be steady, in the pocket, and have a good sound. The goal is to have your thumb lock into the groove, but also have a bit of a swing to it so it doesn't sound mechanical. Don't worry if you sound mechanical at first - this is natural. It takes time and practice in order to develop a steady thumb that's both grooving and on time.
