Watch the Bringing Out The Melody online guitar lesson by Tommy Emmanuel from Fingerstyle Breakthroughs

In this video we'll talk a bit about some ways to get the melody out. This is important to get under your fingers and the time you spend working on it now will prove very useful once we get further into the repertoire part of the course.

Take it slow at first, and then ease the tempo up on your metronome as you get more comfortable playing through each exercise.

In fingerstyle, this is an area that not everyone is aware of, and most of the time it's not their fault - it's just that they haven't been playing long enough. When people are learning, they're using all of their brain power to make sure that they are playing it right, and not focusing on what the melody sounds like. When practicing, make a point to record yourself and listen back to make sure that the melody is coming out right. To help you become more aware of this, we'll look at "House of the Rising Sun".

When playing a song, I often try to emulate the part of the singer. A singer must phrase, take breaths, and can make the melody on the beat, behind it, or anticipate the beat. When you do this, the instrumentals you play will contain a vocal quality that is more melodic.
