Watch the Avalon online guitar lesson by Tommy Emmanuel from Fingerstyle Breakthroughs

In this segment Tommy shows you how to play the song "Avalon".

This version is based on Chet Atkins' 1954 recording of the tune on Live at the Grand Ole Opry, featuring several embellishments and Chet-isms that he used, broken down here into its simplest form. Also check out Chet and Les Paul's version on Chester and Lester, it's a definitive take on the song. There's two versions of this song that will be played here, one at the "definitive speed" close to what Chet played at and another slowed down for you.

In a tune such as this from the 30's and 40's, you'll see a lot of 6ths and 9ths being used. To accomplish this easily, utilize covering two strings with one finger to get an authentic sound. Hopefully this will explain some of the fingerings that are happening in the video, as it may not be clear how certain sounds are achieved.
