We're going to do "Waltzing Matilda" now. A lot of you may already know this song - I think this song is known the world over. There are several "Waltzing Matildas"; I know at least two. I played in a band called The Bushwhackers back in the 80's in Australia, and we used to do the more traditional Australian bush ballad version, but the version I'm going to teach you is actually the Scottish melody that the composer wrote the words to.
When I got to know Chet Atkins, one of the first things he asked me was, "Show me how to play 'Waltzing Matilda'." So, I did! I couldn't believe it - my teacher was asking me to teach him something. That's how it goes - as Sting said, "Your student becomes your master."
Anyway, "Waltzing Matilda" is a song people have been singing around the world for at least a hundred years. Australian soldiers would sing the song to keep morale up, and keep their patriotism alive. I can tell you that the song means a great deal to me, and a lot of times when I'm on the road, people say to me, "Do you miss Australia?" And I say yes, but, I have "Waltzing Matilda", and every time I open the guitar case there's a bit of Australia right there: A Maton guitar made from Australian wood and Australian built. Like me!
So, here it is, "Waltzing Matilda".
