Watch the E minor 9th Funky Vamp online guitar lesson by Frank Vignola from Vamps, Jams and Improv
In this E min7 jam, we discuss minor 9 chord, chord clusters (three note chords based on the upper part of the scale) and 16th note rhythm patterns. Again we work on playing chords clean and crisp. I introduce a few different inversions of the minor 9th chord.
The chord cluster material includes printed chord grids of the different chord clusters that I use. This is a great way to support the soloist's ideas by staying out of the way of the particular tonal center the soloist may choose.
I also introduce an exercise similar to how drummers will practice playing a drum roll real slowly and then incrementally speed up the tempo until the drum roll is up to a very fast tempo. Then they'll slow it back down incrementally to a slow tempo. This is a great way to build strength and accuracy in your picking hand.
