Now let's add a little subtlety to it with what I think of as a hi-hat. I lightly fill in the spaces with an up-down brush of my thumb kind of like a hi-hat would do. The volume is lower than the kick and snare.
This is a simple thing but it's often overlooked. It's a thing of beauty all in the right hand. Like a finesse thing, it adds a lot to it.
I don't necessarily assign this to a specific string. It doesn't really matter, just where I'm hitting. Also, I sometimes add a fill to emphasize the 1 coming back around.
