We're using our right hand for the drums. Thumb for the kick or bass drum, and index for the snare.
The snare usually plays on beats 2 and 4, but in funk that 4 is often delayed. So it might sound on the second half of 4, the "and" of 4-and. That displacement of the accent on the snare is the essence of funk I think. It gives it a certain swagger.
You can also vary your kick pattern once you get the groove going to give some added interest.
