Watch the G7 Bb7 C7 online guitar lesson by Robbie Calvo from Sweet Notes
Let's take a look at a rhythm & blues style progression in the key of G. We are going to be moving from the 5th fret position down to the 3rd fret position and working with the G minor pentatonic scale and three new arpeggios. The reason that I am working with you at a certain fret position on all of these examples is that I want to solidify your knowledge of chord tones and note names in different regions of the fretboard.
O.K. Let's get started by playing our first chord, the G7. Play the chord and name the notes in the chord G - B - D - F. Now let's superimpose and play a G minor pentatonic scale over the chord and name the notes in the scale, G - Bb - C - D - F. We can see from this that the scale and chord have three notes in common. These notes are G - D and F. That's right, these are the "Sweet Notes" that we'll be targeting with our sample licks.
Lick 1 This lick starts with the b7 (F) and resolves in bar 1 to the 5th which is D. The second bar is a descending 16th note lick that resolves to D again only an octave lower.Lick 2 This lick starts with a chromatic 8th note phrase and resolves to the b7 (F).Lick 3 The first three notes of this lick are all chord tones. The F bend up to G then the 8th note phrase F to D and ultimately resolving back to G an octave lower. Nice!
Let's play the G7 chord again, name the notes G - B - D - F. Now we are going to learn a G7 arpeggio shape at the 3rd fret and learn some "Sweet Notes" licks that can be used over the chord.
Lick 1 A one octave G7 arpeggio lick starting and resolving to the root (G). Lick 2 A simple 8th note lick resolving this time to the 3rd (B).Try playing this lick as a 16th note phrase. Lick 3 An ascending one octave lick starting on D and resolving to D (5th). Lick 4 A descending lick resolving to F (b7). Notice the chromatic tones G - Gb - F. A quick point on chromatic tones; you can connect any scale or arpeggio tones with chromatics providing you always resolve to a chord tone.
