Watch the Composing Hooks online guitar lesson by Matthieu Brandt from Songwriting on Guitar
A hook is a harmonic, rhythmic or melodic element of a song (or combination thereof) that draws the attention of the listener. A device to grab the ear and hook the listener to the song.
There are a number of qualities a good hook should have, that are discussed in this section. A hook can be played only once or keep occurring throughout the song. In some cases it even defines the song. Hooks should be simple, short, have a solid rhythm and preferably underline a lyrical statement. It should use attention grabbing guitar tricks and use clearly distinguisable patterns.
