Watch the Inversions & Bass Lines online guitar lesson by Matthieu Brandt from Songwriting on Guitar
The use of inversions of chords give a songwriter the opportunity to create much more elaborate bass lines. He/she can color the progression and create forward momentum or a deceptible rest by using a pedal bass. By looking at individual chord tones of a chord progressions, a composer can be more concious about the bass note he wants. Ascending and descending lines can be created with a much higher variety, than by just using root position chords within one key.
