Watch the Melody: The Basics online guitar lesson by Matthieu Brandt from Songwriting on Guitar
Upto now we've concentrated on the harmonic tools a songwriter has to shape his/her songs. The second musical element we'll dive into is the melody. Harmony and melody interact to set the mood of a song or a section of a composition. We'll first look at melodies without harmony to get a grip on the basic feel a melody note can have. Does it feel stable or does it have an urge to move somewhere else. This tension can make for certain melodic movements up or down. Melodies use a certain pitch range and well written melodies generally follow a stepwise motion, with an occasionl large jump. We'll also take a look at 'Gap filling'; the urge of a melody to go into the opposite direction after a large jump.
