The bass line is one of the first things that will be noticed by a listener. Changes in mood can be set by direcing the bass line. An upward moving bass line (especially in numerical order) can create expectancy. A pedal bass can make for a static often dark mood, or can hold the progression back a bit. A downward bass line motion often makes for a reflective pensive mood, sometimes a bit depressing or sad.
