Watch the Harmony Lead: 4 online guitar lesson by Robbie Calvo from SoloCraft

I have provided scale fingerboard diagrams of the D major scale at the 5th fret so you can really see the relationships between all of the notes. Follow with me on the video, playing each example and name the notes as you do so. To add a harmony a 3rd above the melody(in this case a one octave D major scale), we would start the same scale only this time three notes higher than the original note (D). The first note that we'll need to play to create a 3rd above would be F#. So what we are going to do now is play over the D major scale that I've recorded but we'll be playing the scale starting on the F# and playing up to F# an octave higher and then descending down the scale back to F#. Listen to the video first and then rewind and play through the exercise with me.
