Watch the Standard Tuning online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Slide Guitar Power

Along with practicing all of your normal scales, riffs, and chord forms while using a slide in standard tuning, there are a variety of ways to emulate the open tuning sound while reaping the benefits of one's in-grained familiarity with standard tuning. When I play guitar with Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers (or with my own band, The Groove Kings), I always play slide in standard tuning but make a concerted effort to emulate an open-tuned sound when I can, as that sonority is the one most closely associated with the nature of slide guitar.
