Watch the John Lee Hooker Style: Open A online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Slide Guitar Power

This boogie groove, found at the heart of JLH's "Boogie Chillen" as well as ZZ Top's "La Grange," features constant strumming of the open strings against a series of ascending hammer-ons on the A string, played in different positions. Be sure to memorize all of these licks in this tuning, because, not only do they sound great and offer a perfect foundation for playing in this tuning, you will be able to adapt all of these licks and patterns to the open G tuning to equally powerful effect. You will hear many of these licks on Johnny Winter's "Mean Town Blues," which finds its roots in "Boogie Chillen."
