Watch the Incorporating Open Strings online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Slide Guitar Power

As is the case with all open tunings, incorporating open strings into your licks and solos while in the open A tuning will provide endless avenues for invention and creativity. A great place to start is by picking each open string followed by notes on the third and fifth fret of each string (fret these normally and with the slide as a means of familiarizing yourself). An interesting twist is to skip over the B string and move directly from the G string to the high E string when playing through the scale or playing licks for soloing (a similar approach is useful in open E, executed by skipping the G string and moving directly from the D string to the B string.
