Watch the Johnny Winter Style: Open D online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Slide Guitar Power

Played as a fast shuffle (a few notches up from Dylan's original version), Winter's take on "Highway 61 Revisted" is overflowing with incredible, virtuoso-like slide licks and phrases. Johnny uses a thumb pick when he plays, so I used a flatpick to attain a similar pick attack, but also incorporate a fingerpicked approach, as Johnny fingerpicks along with the thumb pick is the execution of all of these licks and phrases. I begin in 12th position with Elmore James style phrases on the top two strings at the 12th fret, alternating between the use of the pick on the B string and a fingerpick on the high E string. In bars 6 and 7, I play a repeated one-bar lick that quickly alternates between the top two strings followed by a slide down the B string and a note on the G string. This is followed up with a drop down to open position and a classic JW phrase that slides up and down the high E, followed by quick pull-offs to the open B. You will notice that precision with the pick-hand is equally essential to that of the fret-hand in the clean execution of these complex licks.
