Watch the Ry Cooder Style: Open E online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Slide Guitar Power
Ry Cooder was one of my very first slide guitar influences. Right around the time I heard Duane Allman and Johnny Winter for the first time (let's say around 1970/71). I also heard Ry's first eponymous album, which contained his incredible, unaccompanied rendition of Blind Willie Johnson's, "Dark Was the Night, Cold was the Ground" (titled "Dark Is the Night" on this release), along with Sleepy John Estes', "Brownsville." Ry used this same approach for some of his soundtrack work, such as his masterful soundtrack for the film, "Paris, Texas." This example is played in that style.
