Watch the Elmore James Style: Open E online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Slide Guitar Power

Elmore James was without question one of the greatest practitioners of playing slide guitar in an open E, and open E-type tuning, so it is essential to study his playing and learn a handful of his licks as they provide a major ingredient in the study and development of the language of blues slide guitar. A great many of the Elmore James slide classics are played as mid-tempo shuffles, such as "Dust My Broom," "Sweet Home Chicago," "I Believe (My Time Ain't Long)," among others. In the accompanying example, I remain stationed primarily in 12th position for the slide licks, while quickly moving back down the fretboard to play the chordal accompaniment.
