Once you've got down the spreads nice and cleanly you can try adding in the "skank" part on the upper strings to accent the 2 and 4 as well. You may have noticed that I changed my voicing for the Dmi7 chord (D). The reason I did this was to give me a different top note on that chord. If I had stayed in position my top note would have been an A on both the Ami7 chord and Dmi7 chord.
You can build the pace of a solo section by adding the accents to your spread chords. So, the next time someone else is soloing try playing the spreads only on the first four bars and then add the accents on the 2 and 4 for the remaining 4 bar section. If you do this and the bass player and drummer are locked in and listening they will follow suit and raise the dynamic floor with their instruments as well.
