Watch the Soul Surfer online guitar lesson by Robbie Calvo from The Rhythm Architect

As I mentioned in the previous section I wanted to combine this fingerpicking acoustic part with the strumming acoustic part to create a classic rock sound. I also kept the capo at the second fret because I really like the voicing you get using the open D scale shapes.

If you get the chance to play acoustic guitar with another guitarist try this approach on some other songs as I think you'll find a place for the technique in the studio, jam session or your live performances. If you aren't adept at finger style playing, that's okay, just find a nice way of arpeggiating the open chords with your pick. You may even prefer this to the sound you get with your fingers!
