The Aeolian mode is the 6th mode of the major scale and relates directly to the VI minor chord built off the 6th degree of the major scale. The Aeolian mode is also commonly know as the natural minor scale.
The chord progression I’ve created has a tonal center of the VImi7 chord so we will be using the 6th mode of the major scale, the Aeolian mode to improvise over this progression.
The characteristic note of the Aeolian mode is the b6 or minor 6th. We’ll be targeting this note whenever possible to bring out the Aeolian flavor of this minor mode/tonal center. Let's take a look at the roadmap, chord progression and scale shapes.
