Watch the Section 3 : Phrygian Mode online guitar lesson by Robbie Calvo from Power Play: Minor

The Phrygian mode is the third mode of the major scale and relates directly to the III minor built off the 3rd degree of the major scale.

The chord progression I’ve created has a tonal center of the IIImi7 chord so we will be using the 3rd mode of the major scale - the Phrygian mode to improvise over this progression.

The characteristic note of the Phrygian mode is the b2 or minor 2nd. We’ll be targeting this note whenever possible to bring out the real flavor of this minor mode and tonal center. Let's take a look at the road map, chord progression and scale shapes.
