Watch the Breaths - Air - Space online guitar lesson by Robbie Calvo from Power Phrasing
Leaving space in a musical arrangement is really tough sometimes especially when we are asked to take a solo. However one of the sexiest ways to phrase across an R&B track is to leave tons of space. Emote, breathe, make another statement, breathe, so sexy!
A great analogy would be making love to someone as opposed to just having sex, or the difference between Barry White and Metallica, you get the picture:-)
So in this section we are going to be Barry White and make love to the backing track with our sweet notes. Once we've tried that approach let's alternate between the sustained notes and the short phrases with air to see how radically different both approaches are and how they effect the overall arrangement of the music.
A great way to approach this type of phrasing is to do the opposite of phrasing between the riffs in the muisc and actually phrase over the riffs leaving the open space where the chords are just drifting, check out what I mean by listening to my demo solo on this section.
