Watch the One Bar Phrases online guitar lesson by Robbie Calvo from Power Phrasing
In this segment we’ll be playing over a track that has two very distinctive riffs that take up 2 beats of every 2 bars. The idea is to play a phrase that leaves space before and after each riff plays. Why? Well, i’m getting you to focus on leaving air between these melodic elements and your melodic elements. Space is better than clutter and really great phrasing leaves space for the listener to breath and enjoy the moments you are creating for them.
This is going to be a very powerful section for you if you are not used to playing with other people - you are going to have to learn to listen and feel where the riffs are coming each time (beats 3 and 4 of bar 2), keeping your phrases musical and simple is going to be key.
Regarding the musical component, absorb the feel of the track and understand its rhythmic pulse, try and understand what needs to be said melodically and rhythmically over the groove. Start tuning in to the feel and the space around your phrases and all of this will make more sense to you.
