Watch the Break The Box With The Box online guitar lesson by Robbie Calvo from The Power of Five

You are going to learn how to break out of the minor pentatonic box by using the same minor pentatonic box shape. I hear you say how are you going to do that?

Well, there are several places on the fretboard you can place and play that shape over any musical progression or chord vamp and each location will sound different from the others. This variation in melodic options occurs because you are using different notes at that location. The shape stays the same but the notes change. More often than not you can still use your hard-earned licks in each of those positions and they'll all sound different at each fretboard location. This means you've just freshened up and expanded your lick vocabulary without learning any new scale shapes - you can't beat that!
