Watch the Applying The Box Dm7 - Fmaj7 - Gm7 online guitar lesson by Robbie Calvo from The Power of Five

This melodic rock progression is in the key of F and utilizes the F chord, Dmi7 and Gmi7.

I wanted to show how we could use the 3 diatonic minor pentatonics from this key to create a really nice melodic solo filled with rhythmic and melodic motifs without working too hard to achieve something very musical.

You'll notice that by combining all three pentatonics I'll get all of the notes of the F major scale, so even if you don't know a major scale yet, you can combine these three pentatonic shapes any which way you want to and you get the same result as our 7 note scale.

Notice the octave skips in the motif. This is a really nice way of opening up your pentatonic lines. I'm sure I'll throw in some wider skips later - we'll see!

Here are the 3 diatonic minor pentatonic scales from F major scale.

G Minor Pent = G-Bb-C-D-F = 2nd-4th-5th-6th-R of F Major scale

A Minor Pent = A-C-D-E-G = 3rd-5th-6th-7th-2nd of F Major Scale

D Minor Pent = D-F-G-A-C = 6th-R-2nd-3rd-5th of F Major Scale.
