Watch the Altered online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from Modes That Matter
While I’m a deep believer in no mode is married to one specific style, it would be criminal to say the altered scale is at home in much else than jazz. Even with the funk jam heard in the previous segment more than likely that scenario would be rooted in a “jazz-funk” setting where the lines between the two styles are blurred and are really rooted in jazz more than funk.
As warned this scale’s application is one that needs to be examined in a context where’s it being played over changes and that’s exactly what the deal is here. Set in the key of C the vamp starts off with a series of altered V7 chords rooted from G and then makes nice when it resolves to the tonic C chords. Listen carefully in the video as I explain how to navigate your way through this process and keep those thoughts in mind as you play through the other V7 chord scales and modes.
