Watch the Symmetrical Diminished online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from Modes That Matter

Some additional facts about symmetrical diminished to keep in mind:

-Just like whole tone produces an augmented triad on each degree, symmetrical diminished produces a dim7 tetrad off each degree.
-Just like whole tone there are a limited amount of actual symmetrical diminished scales. Given the fact every three half steps a symmetrical diminished scale repeats itself, there’s only three unique scales.
-There exists another octatonic diminished scale aptly called the diminished scale or auxiliary diminished scale (1 2 b3 4 #4 #5 6 b7) that’s closely related to the symmetrical diminished scale.
This alter-ego scale is also symmetrical as it runs a repeating, cyclical pattern of whole step/half steps intervals. Unlike, the symmetrical diminished the auxiliary diminished scale is NOT a V7 chord scale application.
