Watch the G Ionian Progression online guitar lesson by Robbie Calvo from The Modal Alchemist

The G Ionian chord progression is a chord progression that is built from chords derived from the G major scale and also resolves to the first chord of that scale G major or G major 7. (Any variation thereof too)

The chord progression is a I - III - IV - V and the voicings I played were, G - Bm7 - C5/2 - D/F#. Not a complex progression by any means but it is musical and will provide a cool backing for our Ionian solo.

You can hear that this progression starts and resolves nicely to the G chord. I want you to start recognizing these tonal centers by ear because it will help you with your improvising.

If you'd like to change the voicing of the chords, go for it, just make sure any notes you choose are found in the G major scale, okay?
