Watch the C Lydian Soloing online guitar lesson by Robbie Calvo from The Modal Alchemist

In true fashion, my opening note is a chord tone, G, the 5th of our C major 7 chord. I try to always go for a chord tone to open my solos because it adds strength immediately to a phrase and gives a strong place to begin your conversation. Think of it this way would you prefer to begin a sentence a Um?, or Hello?

I start off playing long sustained notes following the chords before opening the phrases up to more pace and dynamics with the use of scale based runs, double stops and a C major 7 arpeggio. You'll notice that I'm using a wide range of the fretboard for my ideas too.

Learn some of the licks I played and incorporate them into your own phrases. You could also try playing a lick that works over the four measure progression changing it slightly each time the progression loops. That is a great way of creating hooks, motifs and ultimately memorable melodies.
