Watch the Mark Knopfler online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Kings of Tone
This lesson borrows the chord progression from the tune "What It Is" from the Sailing to Philadelphia CD and is classic Knopfler. The chord progression is in F#m and I am mainly using the F#m pentatonic scale (F#, A, B, C#, E) for the solo. Although the pentatonic scale is the first scale we usually learn as guitarists because it is fairly simple to use it also produces a certain sound. In this case the scale adds an openness to the solo, as opposed to using F# aeolian. We want scales to be a musical choice, not one made because we don't know any other scales!
