Watch the David Gilmour online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Kings of Tone
Gilmour's main amp for years is a 100 watt Hiwatt. Hiwatt was started in England in 1966 and as far as I know Gilmour has been using the amps mostly since then. So when searching for the Gilmour tone we need to start off with a great clean tone. Don't have a Hiwatt? No worries, fortunately a good clean tone is often easier to get than a good distorted tone, most Fender amps have very good clean tones. A great inexpensive amp that makes a nice platform for pedals is the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, I'd stick to the clean channel and use pedals. If I am on the road and amps are rentals I will often get one of these because they are everywhere and are reliable. I bring my favorite pedals and I'm good to go! Can't be too picky out there!
