Watch the Duane Allman online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Kings of Tone
Slide guitar is a tradition that has it's roots in Africa. Made popular by American blues men like Robert Johnson, Son House, Blind Willie Johnson, Elmore James, Tampa Red, Muddy Waters, in the 30's and 40's. It is fairly ubiquitous in rock and roll. Some great players to check out as well, Johnny Winter, Sonny Landreth, Derek Trucks, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, Lowell George, David Tronzo, and many more. One of my favorite slide players is George Harrison, he had a very distinctive tone and vibrato, he was also in a pretty good band!
