Watch the Eric Clapton online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Kings of Tone
Clapton's tone has changed a fair amount throughout the years from Gibsons, to Fender guitars and Marshall, Fender and Soldano amps. The tone he is most noted for is from his early Bluesbreakers and Cream era. That to me is the sound of rock and roll, a Gibson into a Marshall. Thick, creamy, wooly, and loud this tone also conttributed to his hearing loss! Fortunately this tone is immortalized on records like Wheels of Fire and Cream Live.
