Watch the Dickey Betts online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Kings of Tone

As I will continue to state, tone is in the hands, but certainly a good guitar and amp helps. The first thing I do is plug directly into the amp and work on getting a tone I like there, then I go from there. The unfortunate truth is guitar amps sound better loud, it's simple physics and the mechanics of how amplifiers work. All the guys I am discussing played loud and the tones we love so much are really only accomplished at that volume. Sorry! So when I get asked "How can I get (insert classic guitar tone here) at a bedroom volume?' I usually say, "You can't". We can get something in the ball park and fun to play but the same isn't going to happen.
