Watch the The Edge online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Kings of Tone

Multi effects units vs pedals. This is a tough one to answer, certainly multi effect units are less expensive and take up way less room. On the other hand I find pedals easier to navigate and usually the multi unit is trying to emulate those very pedals. So what to do? Well, overall I prefer separate pedals, maybe because they are so much fun! If I am playing a gig where the guitar parts are heavily effect driven such as U2, it'll go multi. You can usually pre-program them and call up the effects for each song. Very cool! But before you go on a gig with a multi unit be sure you know it inside and out. They can be very confusing and you often need a computer degree to figure them out.
