Watch the Jimi Hendrix online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Kings of Tone
Jimi knew a fair bit about music, he may not have been schooled but he clearly knew what he was doing. In this performance I am soloing over an E5 chord, this gives us some cool options that we can exploit. Since the chord has no 3rd we can treat it as either a major or minor but in my bass line I do have a b7 so we are limited to a few scales. E Dorian, E Aeolian, and E Mixolydian (we could use Phrygian but it's not something Jimi would normally do). In the first section I use an E Mixolydian scale similar to what he does in "Machine Gun" and "Third Stone From The Sun". After that I kick into E minor blues.
