Watch the Jimi Hendrix online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Kings of Tone
Hendrix was a Strat guy and he tuned it down to Eb, as does SRV, Van Halen, and many other great players. Why? Because it sounds awesome! There is a certain envelope the notes get when tuned down that really shines with Strats. There are all sorts of theories on how using a right handed Strat strung lefty effected Jimi's tone. I'm sure this had a play in the sound but any Strat style guitar with single coil pickups will get you there. If you intend upon keeping a guitar tuned down a half step many people move up to a thicker string gauge, not only will this sound better it will make the guitar feel more like your other guitars do.
