Watch the The Maj 3rd, b5th, 6th & 9th online guitar lesson by Rob Garland from The Guitarist's Pentathlon

The licks I played combined traditional minor pentatonic lines with the new customized tones in a blues context. These chromatic lines will work in any musical genre and bring a fresh approach to soloing. Work on each new tone one at a time and gradually build towards chromatic lines. I took a traditional lick out of Gm pentatonic shape 3 and added the b5th to it to make it sound more edgy. Also remember the best solos often have a range of dynamics and approaches so one suggestion would be to follow a busy jazzy line with a simple blues lick. The only rule is that there are no rules as long as you think it sounds good. All we are is dust in the wind, okay no need for that last one.
