Watch the Outside Sound: Over Minor online guitar lesson by Rob Garland from The Guitarist's Pentathlon

In the example I began by setting up a rhythmic motif and timing the use of my outside notes around the end of the 4th bar, (as it resolves into the next bar) the place where you might move a chord when comping. Try beginning with just one or two notes and resolving. Trust the ear, don't think about the theory behind it, just listen and try to lock in with the rhythm of the track. I think this idea is most effective when used sparingly, comparable to a hot spice added to food, a little goes a long way. Be prepared to spend some time experimenting and be confident with your playing, commit to the outside notes then resolve and stare your audience in the eye!
