Watch the Piano Funk online guitar lesson by Matthieu Brandt from Guitar Lab: Triads and Hendrixian Double Stops
In this lesson we'll play through a funky piano groove and create a triadic backup part that enhances this groove. The best piano / guitar backup parts sound like they are one, working with each other and working off of each other. Sometimes playing the same groove and chords, sometimes complementing each other.
When you’re trying to find a good spot to lay your triads down in the groove it’s often best to rehearse this in a small setting. Especially when the other backup artist is a piano player or a keyboard player.
As guitarists we tend to study guitar players and a lot of times we kind of wing it when an arrangement with a piano player, Hammond organ player or synth player is involved. In a small setting you can zoom into their grooves and figure out what you want to play and where you want to play it.
