Watch the Accents online guitar lesson by Brad Carlton from Guitar Lab: Solid Strumming
This lesson will give you some tips on how to apply accents in your rhythm guitar playing. The first technique will be what we will term "squeezing technique" which refers to the principle of controlling dynamic changes simply by how loosely or tightly you hold the pick. You will see demonstrations of how to control the volume of a chord as you strum it from the lowest string to the highest string. This allows you to bring out the higher voices of the chord while you strum. This technique is effective in both rhythm guitar and in chord melody. Another advantage of this concept is that you can control the lower voices by playing them lightly thus giving you head room to have the treble strings sing without sounding harsh.
We will cover applying accents on the downbeat as well as on the upbeat which really adds interest to your rhythm guitar parts. And finally we will continue to apply this technique to various string groups which will increase your precision in your picking hand.
