Watch the The Backbeat online guitar lesson by Brad Carlton from Guitar Lab: Solid Strumming
In our continuing quest to play the guitar as a drum kit, this lesson examines a technique termed the palm slap. This is a wonderful percussive tool which is very effective in establishing the backbeat. The backbeat consists of beats two and four. This is where the snare drum is played in a typical 4/4 groove. This is one of those techniques that may seem awkward at first, but once it’s learned, it's as easy as falling off a log.
Remember your goal is to be able to sound as much as you can like the whole band. This means the kick drum, snare drum, ride cymbal or hi hat, bassline, and harmony. After you've got this going on you can start adding horn lines and counter melodies.
