Watch the b3 1 Move online guitar lesson by Brad Carlton from Guitar Lab: Riff Generator

This lesson covers one of the most important melodic moves in blues oriented soloing. The b3 to 1 move is not only strong in the sense that the root is the target tone, but it also offers up the options of bending the b3 up towards the 3. All of the pitch variations between the b3 and the 3 are critical for your blues sound. I will demonstrate the concept of a "smear" which is the beginning of the b3 up to a point short of the 3. This can also be viewed as a quarter step bend. Our goal is to emulate the human voice.

This b3 to 1 move can be laid out two different ways: both notes on the same string or on adjacent strings. Each layout presents specific options which will be covered in this lesson.

Each lesson in this course is accompanied with specific color-coded diagrams to aid you in visualizing the information on the fingerboard.
