Watch the One - Two - One Forms online guitar lesson by Brad Carlton from Guitar Lab: The Golden Arp

Our next category of the Add 9 arpeggio is the one-two-one layout. It's very useful because it's more position oriented; you won't have huge stretches to contend with. You can also get a lot of chordal ideas from this group.

Look at ex 18 for the tab and diagram for this root position arpeggio. Measure one is in 9th position and as you follow the video, you will recognize the piano style, country and Hendrix styling that this form presents. Measure two presents some technical challenges, but here is an example of a lick that can be used as a musical daily exercise. Try a workout. You play the arpeggio in all keys; starting in 1st position (F# Add 9) and working your way all the way up the neck and then back down. Measure three is fingered the same as measure one and finally measure four is great as a rhythm guitar tool and is not very difficult. Just remember to use an upright finger posture on these licks to maintain the ringing of the strings.
