Pentatonic scales are a useful and familiar tool for guitarists. Inside the Dorian mode there are three pentatonic subscales. Diagram 66 displays the A minor pentatonic scale which could also be called C major pentatonic. This explains my labeling of I min pent/ VI maj pent. As you can see from the diagram the resulting scale degrees are: 1, b3, 4, 5, b7. The next pentatonic subscale would be E minor pentatonic or G major pentatonic (V min pent/ bVII maj pent). This would create a different sound because one note has been changed from your previous pentatonic subscale. The b3 has been replaced with the 9 (2). I suggest you compare diagram 67 with diagram 66 to see this change. Because of this change there is a more harmonically extended or jazzy sound to this pentatonic approach. Our final pentatonic subscale is presented in diagram 68. It would be B minor pentatonic or D major pentatonic (II min pent/ IV maj pent). This would be the most extended sound because the b7 has been replaced with the 13 (6).
