PRINCIPLE 45 - POP STYLE SOLO’S

Defining pop guitar solo’s is very subjective but I would venture to say that they would be melodically structured ideas that fit closely with the underlying harmony. Also adding additional melodic hooks to a solo can also enhance how popular a song becomes. The more hooks a song can have the more appeal it will have to the listener.

A guitar solo is a musical extension of the vocal melody and should enhance the music rhythmically and melodically in some way. Referencing the vocal melody at points in a solo is a great way to reinforce the melodic hook and theme of a song. Great soloists will often take the vocal melody and re-phrase at the beginning of a solo. I’m a huge advocate of this and would say that it is a perfect way to gently ease the listener into your improvisations.
