PRINCIPLE 42 - SWEET NOTES
You should already understand the concept of chord tone improvisation by now so lets get down to playing over a couple of examples to demonstrate the power of knowing where your ‘Sweet Notes’ are in any given situation.
If we totally improvise using the Sweet Notes approach you cannot possibly ever hit a wrong note. You’ll also be reinforcing the harmony with the strongest possible tones against each chord. The most impressive way to hear the power of this is when you have chords in a progression that are chromatic or don’t conform to being derived from one key. Typically the listener won’t understand why you sound so good, they’ll just know that you are on the case musically and have your chops together!
The other thing to remember here is that if your chords contain chord extensions these are also chord tones and can be targeted as ‘Sweet Notes’.
Let’s start simple with the 2 chord progression from our video lesson and then you can build up to an example that will make you sweat a little....G7 - B7 - C7 - D7. I suggest you use arpeggio’s for each chord...Cool!
